Preventing Motorcycle Accidents
Just last week, the Georgia State Patrol issued a caution to alert drivers to the dangers of motorcycle accidents. Their warning was timely considering warmer weather brings more cyclists to Georgia roads. And like most accident-prevention campaigns, this one is something that should be revisited again and again.
“Safety is the mutual responsibility of all drivers on the road,” explained Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety Colonel Mark McDonough. McDonough explained that motorcyclists are the most at risk of all motorists on the road for fatal crashes. He cautions that drivers often don’t notice motorcycles when they aren’t paying close attention. He suggests always checking blind spots multiple times, using your mirrors, and always signaling a turn.
When following a motorcycle, it’s also important to give them plenty of room. What would be a fender bender with another car could cause significant injury or even death when it involves a motorcycle.
According to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 4,600 motorcyclists were killed in 2011, representing an increase over those killed in 2010. The number of fatal motorcycle accidents has been steadily climbing for the past three years.
One thing that can reduce your risk of death or traumatic brain injury when on a motorcycle is a helmet. “Helmets are estimated to be 37-percent effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle riders,” says the NHTSA.
Helmet use has been steadily climbing over the years as those people riding motorcycles has also increased. The agency estimates that helmets saved more than 1,600 lives in 2011. They say another 703 could have been saved if every cyclist wore a helmet.
Motorcycle safety is definitely everyone’s business. If you are involved in an accident with a motorcycle and it’s your fault, you could be held legally responsible. Likewise, if it’s someone else’s fault, they can be held responsible. In the end, the drivers who are the safest—though they still may be involved in an accident—are more likely to come out ahead.
