When Racing Turns Deadly

When Racing Turns Deadly

Racing is not everyone’s idea of a good time, but for those people who enjoy the adrenaline rush and have the need for speed, racing is one way they fulfill that desire. However, when racing is done off the track, it poses dangers for everyone on the road, including innocent drivers, pedestrians, and motorcyclists.

There are safe places for racing. Drag strips and tracks exist solely to let people indulge their love of racing without putting others at risk. Still, some racers prefer to take it to the streets, and this is where they run into problems.

Recently, a woman was racing on I-20 near Atlanta when she crashed her car. The other vehicle she was racing didn’t get hit, but a pickup truck did. The occupants of the young woman’s car, along with the occupants of the pickup she hit, all suffered for her decision.

According to the Associated Press, the 22-year-old woman had her 7-month-old baby and 19-year-old boyfriend in the car at the time of the accident, both of whom died. Two passengers from the pickup truck were also injured in the wreck.

As if that wasn’t enough, the traffic slow-down that resulted caused another (more minor) accident when a vehicle rear-ended another who was slowing down.

Street racing is against the law to prevent this type of scenario. What may be fun for one or two people could ultimately cause serious harm to others.

It isn’t clear if the driver in this case will face criminal charges, but she could face a wrongful death claim from the family of her young boyfriend or a personal injury claim(s) from the passengers of the pickup truck.

Speed truly increases your risk of being involved in a serious accident. Even if you aren’t racing, going too fast for the conditions of the road can make it more difficult for you to slow down if someone turns into your path or if the light turns red. When speed is a factor in an accident, the results are often tragic.
