Two Atlanta Cousins Killed in Fatal Crash: Racing a Possible Cause

On Saturday, February 18, 2017 a fatal crash claimed the lives of two men, ages 31 and 32, and the life of a young woman. The cousins were riding down I-285 near Moreland Avenue in a Camaro. Their car was then clipped by the driver of another Camaro, which was transporting the young woman.  Both cars spun out of control.

EXCESSIVE SPEED WAS A FACTOR

The police have indicated that excessive speed was a factor in the accident.

An eyewitness recalls the accident as it took place. The sounds of screeching metal and a cloud of smoke engulfing I-285 as two bodies lay in the road and another inside of one of the vehicles. The eyewitness was traveling home from a night shift preparing to take Exit 51 when he saw a blue 2015 Chevrolet Camaro SS approaching the rear of vehicle.

The eyewitness then saw a 2014 Camaro LT follow the blue Camaro. Both vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed. As the second Camaro changed lanes, the vehicles collided and struck a nearby guardrail. The blue Camaro flipped onto its top and slid a significant distance before coming to a final rest. Both the driver and the passenger were ejected. The driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His passenger later died at Grady Hospital.

The silver Camaro struck a concrete median after hitting the guardrail. The passenger in this vehicle was a young woman who also died at the scene. The driver was transported to Grady with life-threatening injuries. While the investigation is still pending, police believe that racing may have been a possible cause of the accident.

GA Highway Crash and Fatalities Statistics

According to a 2016 survey conducted by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in Georgia, approximately 180 fatalities resulted from speed-related motor vehicle accidents. There were approximately 357 unrestrained vehicle occupant fatalities.

The Risk of Street Racing and Speeding

Street racing is an illegal and extremely dangerous form of reckless driving as it encourages participants to drive at excessively high rates of speed. The specific harms caused by street racing include but are not limited to:

  • The impairment of the driver’s perception time and reaction time
  • The impairment of your vehicle’s braking capability
  • Increased rollover risk
  • An inability to safely maneuver curves
  • Increased risk of skidding off roads
  • Increased risk of harm for those racing
  • Increased risk of harm to other motorists
  • Increased risk of harm to pedestrians

Injuries sustained in a street racing accident are likely to be far more severe in comparison to those sustained in other motor vehicle accidents.
