Most people think they are safer on foot than they are behind the wheel of a car. And while pedestrian accidents aren’t as common as two-vehicle accidents, they are far from a rare occurrence. Fortunately, as a pedestrian, there are several things you can do to prevent being injured in an accident like this.
Every week, it seems, there is another person in the Atlanta area who is hit and killed by a car. Just last week, a Mableton man was hit and killed in the early morning hours on Floyd Road. The driver of the Honda involved in the fatal pedestrian accident likely won’t face criminal charges, according to authorities, though the victim’s family could seek to hold the driver responsible in civil court.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,280 pedestrians were killed in 2010 accidents (the last year for which data is available). More than 70,000 were injured. On average, reports the NHTSA, a pedestrian is killed every two hours in this country, and one is injured every eight minutes.
Though these accidents account for only about 13 percent of all traffic deaths, they are significant. Nearly three-fourths of all pedestrian accidents happen in an urban setting, like Atlanta. They happen in all weather conditions, but nearly 70 percent happen at night.
This tells us that you can work to prevent being the victim of such an accident by avoiding walking around at night or, at the least, making yourself very visible. Wearing bright and light colored clothing and making sure car-drivers see you is crucial in keeping yourself safe while walking around.
Another issue in many pedestrian accidents is where the pedestrian is walking. You are far less likely to be hit by a car if you are walking on the sidewalk or, if there is no sidewalk, in the grass. Walking on the street significantly increases your risk.
Finally, alcohol was a factor in nearly half of all pedestrian accidents in 2010. The impaired person could be either the driver of the car or the pedestrian. While walking home after a night of partying might be safer than driving, this doesn’t mean it comes without risks.
Doing what you can to avoid a pedestrian accident could mean the difference between life and death, quite literally. But, when you do everything you can and are still involved in such an accident, you need someone on your side fighting for justice on your behalf.
