A Look at the USPS Dog Bite Awareness Campaign

Published April 24, 2017 by Bruce Millar
Postal Service Continues Dog Bite Awareness Campaign

The United States Postal Service continues its tradition of bringing attention to dog bites and just wrapping up its campaign to fight back and spread awareness of the dangers of dog bites. The initiative takes places every April, this year from 9th through the 15th, and is a public service safety awareness initiative that offers safety tips and focuses on the need for pet owners to become more responsible and proactive in the prevention of dog bites. This years report offers some staggering numbers;

  • More than 4.5 Million people are bitten annually
  • Last year alone, 6,755 Postal Service employees were attacked by citizens dogs, an increase of 206 attacks from 2015.
  • Nearly 800,000 are seen in emergency rooms for dog attacks and dog bite–injuries.  Many more go untreated.

The United States Postal Service’s website reminds us that the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) reports that children, older adults and delivery workers are the most often attacked by dogs.

The number of dog bites exceeds the reported combined instances of measles, whooping cough and mumps.

  • Dog bite victims make up five percent of emergency room hospital visits.

The Postal Service dog bite awareness campaign offers safety tips and emphasizes that “Any dog can bite. Don’t be fooled”.

Dog Bite awareness InfoAs an experienced Atlanta personal injury law firm that handles a large amount of dog bite attack injury cases, we get to see firsthand the issues that this safety awareness campaign is trying to highlight.  Many of the dog bite injuries that we see could have most likely been prevented if a pet owner had been more responsible or taken more efforts to control or secure their animal. Our attorneys also can attest to the fact that dog bite injuries are not all caused by breeds such as pit bulls. Many attacked reported by letter carriers in 2016 came from dogs whose owners used the well-known, “My dog won’t bite” – But USPS and us as Atlanta Advocates warn; Any dog can bite!

With the growing epidemic of dog bites that we see in Atlanta and all throughout Georgia, we hope that the United States Postal Service’s Dog Bite Awareness Campaign will succeed in bringing attention to this very serious problem.  If more dog owners start taking proactive measures in securing their animals and being aware of what their animals are capable of doing, hopefully some of these vicious and violent dog bite injuries will be prevented.
