The last thing any of us want to deal with, whether on our morning commute or on a road-trip, is a flat tire or other car problems. Being stranded on the side of the road isn’t only frustrating, it’s dangerous. And whether you know how to change a tire or have to wait for AAA, it’s crucial you realize just what could happen when your vehicle leaves you stranded.
Recently, a 30-year-old woman and her 23-year-old brother were stopped on the side of an I-75 on-ramp. They had gotten a flat tire and were putting on the spare in what they thought was a safe area. A “distracted” driver proved them wrong, killing them both.
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the accident happened at about 11:30 a.m. on the I-75 northbound on-ramp at Jonesboro Road. The duo was changing their tire in the triangular section that separates I-75 and the ramp. The driver that hit them was entering I-75 when he hit them.
In an updated article at AJC.com, police reveal that driver told authorities that he was distracted when the accident happened. He is now facing criminal charges for his negligence.
Car trouble may not be something you expect, but it is something you can plan for.
- Whether you are a member of AAA or have a friend who is good with cars, keep that number handy so you aren’t stuck in the middle of nowhere with no one to call.
- Orange warning triangles may seem like an unnecessary expense now, but they can alert other drivers that there is a stalled vehicle ahead and are therefore a wise investment.
- If your vehicle stalls on a busy road, exit the vehicle safely and wait for help away from traffic. Particularly if you are on a main thoroughfare, a collision could prove fatal even when your car isn’t in motion.
- Keeping your vehicle in good running order and doing regularly scheduled maintenance will help prevent problems and allow you to detect problems before they leave you stranded.
When you are involved in an accident, whether you are on your way to work or stopped changing your tire on the side of the road, the person responsible for the crash must be held accountable. You could be entitled to compensation for your injuries and more.
