Atlanta Sports Events Causing Drunk Driving Accidents?

With so many great games to watch, regardless if you are at the game or watching it from home, we want you to be safe. Atlanta United game-days are full of fun things to do with your family and friends. Things like cookouts at home to the tailgating on match-day! The term tailgating as used in celebrating sporting events literally means serving food and drinks from the tailgate of a motor vehicle. If you have ever been to a game you know the fun of the tents, the music, laughter and the Food! Sport events are full of excitement but remember to drink responsibly.

Here are some tips to consider when drinking at any sports event.

  • Make sure you have a local taxi company or ride-sharing app. Apps like Uber and Lift are great for reliable transportation
  • Familiarize yourself with local transportation routes and schedules.
  • Download NHTSA’s “SaferRide” app to make it easy for friends and taxis to find you when you need a ride.
  • Carpool with friends who have assigned a non-drinking driver.

Researcher, Darin Erickson of the University of Minnesota conducted a study to determine how many sports fans consumed alcohol and how many people left the game intoxicated. Erickson targeted 13 baseball games and 3 footballs games. He used a breathalyzer to check fans BAC levels (Blood Alcohol Content). Erickson found that 8% of the fans that consumed alcohol were legally drunk from the 362 adult participants. This means about 29 people left the game drunk, 29 people who could possibly get behind a wheel. That’s more than enough people to cause serious car accidents or other possible related injuries. The CDC has found that up to 1/3 of all traffic-related deaths are caused by drunk drivers. Do not let your alcohol consumption end a good day in a bad way.
