Atlanta Drivers Rank Among Nation’s Most Dangerous

If you’ve ever complained about the number of car accidents and dangerous drivers in Atlanta, there is now some evidence to support your concern.

The recently released 10th annual America’s Best Drivers Report by Allstate ranks Atlanta motorists among the nation’s most accident prone. Atlanta ranked near the bottom of the list of the 200 largest cities in terms of driving safety, indicating they are some of America’s most dangerous.

The analysis of two years of accident claims by Allstate actuaries found that Atlanta drivers are involved in accidents every 7.2 years on average. That is nearly twice as frequently as drivers in Fort Collins, Colo., who have the distinction of being the nation’s safest drivers with 14.2 years between crashes. The national average is 10 years between collisions, according to the Allstate analysis.

Even worse, Atlanta’s roads and highways seem to be getting more dangerous. The latest report shows that Alanta’s driver safety ranking slipped to 179th in 2014 from 164th a year earlier based on the frequency of automobile accidents by Allstate insured drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 1,192 traffic fatalities in Georgia in 2012, the most recent year of complete data. A significant portion of those fatal accidents occurred in the Atlanta area.

Anyone who has driven in the Atlanta area is familiar with its problems – congestion and speeding. Interstate 285, which loops around the entire city, is a prime example. During rush hour, it turns into a parking lot. When rush hour subsides, it transforms into a speedway, with motorists doing 80-plus mph, causing many speeding-related accidents.

Atlanta motorists would do themselves a favor by using a number of alternatives and strategies:

  • Riding the train.
  • Carpooling.
  • Giving themselves more time.
  • Slowing down.
  • Putting up cell phones.

The South is famous for its manners. But too often, courtesy disappears on Atlanta roadways, leading to serious accidents.
