Defensive Driving Tips for Motorcyclists
Whether you are driving a cruiser, chopper, Harley Davidson, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki or any other motorcycle, you risk getting into a serious accident. All too often, these accidents are caused by drivers who aren’t paying attention to the motorcycle rider and fail to avoid them. Because motorcycles provide little protection in crashes and are outweighed by cars and trucks, the results of a motorcycle wreck can be fatal. In 2008, there were 177 motorcycle-related fatalities in Georgia, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Defensive Driving Tips to Help Keep You Safe
To help you stay safe on the roads, we offer the following defensive driving tips:
- Take a Motorcycle Safety Course
Motorcycles are increasingly popular because they cost less than cars and they can be fuel efficient, easy to park and enjoyable to ride. With that said, you need to know proper motorcycle driving technique, including how to brake, turn, handle traffic and maintain your machine. The Georgia Department of Driver Services Motorcycle Safety Program provides several different instruction courses that can help both new and experienced riders.
- Check Out Your Bike
It’s important to make sure your motorcycle is in proper, safe driving condition. You should routinely check your fluids, gears, chain, mirrors and brakes. It’s especially important to make sure you maintain adequate tire pressure.
- Wear Protective Gear when Riding
If you are in a motorcycle accident without a helmet, you can suffer severe head and brain injuries. Make sure your helmet fits correctly and has a clear face shield. You should also wear boots, pants, gloves and a padded shirt or jacket. It’s important that whatever you wear is bright and visible. Many motorcyclists wisely choose to wear reflective tape.
- Don’t Drive in the Rain or Snow
Roads become slippery and dangerous for motorcycles in wet, icy conditions. Never drive in snow. If you are caught in a rainstorm, seek safe shelter and wait until at least 30 minutes after the storm passes before getting back on your bike. Roads can be slick from oil and dirt collecting on the surface after a storm.
- Pay Attention to Other Drivers
When you are traveling on multiple-lane roads, be alert for other drivers. If you are on a two-lane road, look out for people exiting parked cars on the side. At intersections, look left, right, straight ahead, and left again before proceeding. You need to be especially careful when driving near areas where road construction is taking place. You can easily be struck by loose gravel or other flying objects and debris.
