Traffic Statistics — A Fatal Pedestrian Accident Happens Every 2 Hours
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a fatal pedestrian accident occurred once every two hours in 2010. Pedestrian injury-accidents happened once every eight minutes. In all, more than 4,000 people were killed and about 70,000 were injured in 2010 after being hit by a car, truck or other vehicle.
Just last week, a pedestrian was struck and killed in Cherokee County. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a 19-year old pedestrian was hit just before 7 a.m. on East Cherokee Drive near Berry Patch Road. He was walking southbound when he was struck by a PT Cruiser that was rounding a curve.
Pedestrian fatalities were up in 2010 (4 percent when compared with the year before), the last year for which data is available, but down since 2001. Pedestrian deaths accounted for 13 percent of all traffic fatalities.
Some people are more at risk than others, with older adults and children accounting for most of the pedestrian deaths. Also, nearly half of all pedestrian deaths happened on weekends and 30 percent happened between the hours of 8 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.
As a pedestrian, you have to take precautions to ensure that drivers see you. Wearing white or light colors can help, but so can walking on the sidewalk or off of the road. Also, walk towards traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles and get out of the way when they don’t see you. The NHTSA suggests carrying a flashlight at night to make you more visible.
While drivers are required by law to yield to pedestrians in many circumstances, it can be difficult to see someone walking at night. This doesn’t excuse a driver from hitting someone, but is important for pedestrians to understand their safety also lies in their own hands.
Pedestrian accidents are relatively common and happen even when the pedestrian does everything right. Unlike car accidents, a pedestrian doesn’t have an airbag or a large vehicle protecting them, which means these accidents often end far more tragically.
